What Is the Subclass 884 Visa?

The Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa subclass 884 allows an eligible aged parent to remain temporarily in Australia.

It is the temporary stage of a two-step pathway:

Subclass 884 → Subclass 864

The subclass 884 is temporary, while subclass 864 is a permanent visa for eligible aged parents.

The Department confirms that subclass 884 is a current temporary parent visa and subclass 864 is its corresponding permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa.

Who Can Apply for Subclass 884?

You may be able to apply for subclass 884 if you are an aged parent of a settled:

• Australian citizen
• Australian permanent resident
• Eligible New Zealand citizen

You must also satisfy the applicable parent visa requirements, including the balance of family test, sponsorship requirements, health and character requirements and other relevant criteria.

The exact eligibility requirements depend on your individual family and immigration circumstances.

Aged Parent Requirement

Subclass 884 is specifically designed for aged parents.

Unlike the standard Contributory Parent subclass 173, the applicant must meet the applicable age requirement for an aged parent visa.

Stage 2 – Subclass 864

The parent can then apply for the Contributory Aged Parent visa subclass 864, subject to the applicable requirements.

Subclass 864 is a permanent visa that allows an eligible aged parent to remain permanently in Australia.

Important Two-Year Pathway Period

The subclass 884 visa has a limited validity period and cannot simply be extended or renewed.

The Department's current application material states that, to receive the concessions available to temporary Contributory Parent visa holders applying for the corresponding permanent visa, the subclass 864 application should be lodged within 2 years from the grant of the temporary subclass 884 visa.

This is an important consideration when planning the temporary-to-permanent pathway.

Concessions When Applying for Subclass 864

A holder of a temporary Contributory Aged Parent visa may receive important concessions when applying for the corresponding permanent Contributory Aged Parent visa.

Depending on the circumstances, these can include:

• A substantially reduced first instalment of the Visa Application Charge
• No reassessment against the Balance of Family test
• Certain concessions relating to sponsorship
• Generally no further health examination unless requested
• The ability to include certain former family-unit members who were included in the temporary application

Processing Time for Subclass 884

Parent visas are subject to capping and queueing because the number of applications significantly exceeds the number of places available.

The Department assesses valid Parent visa applications against the core criteria and assigns a queue date to applications that meet those criteria. Applications are then released for final processing according to the applicable queue arrangements and available places.

As at 31 May 2026, the Department reported that Contributory Aged Parent subclass 884 applications with queue dates up to November 2018 had been released for final processing.

The Department also currently estimates around 15 years for new Contributory Parent visa applications, although this is an estimate rather than a guarantee for any individual application.

Processing estimates can change due to:

• Withdrawals and refusals

When a place becomes available, the application may proceed to final processing.

Step 8 – Apply for Subclass 864

After obtaining subclass 884, an eligible parent can progress to the permanent subclass 864 pathway within the applicable timeframe.
