Skilled Occupation List Australia

Skilled Occupation List Australia

The Skilled Occupation List Australia provides important information about occupations that may be eligible for different Australian skilled migration and employer-sponsored visa pathways.

Your occupation is one of the first things to check when planning skilled migration to Australia. However, being listed does not automatically mean you qualify for a visa. You may also need to meet requirements relating to your skills assessment, qualifications, English language ability, work experience, age, points, sponsorship, nomination, salary and other visa criteria.

Australia uses different occupation requirements for different visa subclasses. The applicable occupation list, ANZSCO classification, assessing authority and any occupation-specific conditions should therefore be checked against the visa pathway you are considering.

Which Australian Visa Uses Your Occupation?

Your occupation may be relevant to pathways including:

  • Skilled Independent visa subclass 189
  • Skilled Nominated visa subclass 190
  • Skilled Work Regional visa subclass 491
  • Skills in Demand visa subclass 482
  • Employer Nomination Scheme subclass 186
  • Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa subclass 494
  • Other employer-sponsored or labour-agreement pathways where applicable

Core Skills Occupation List – CSOL

The Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) is particularly important for the Skills in Demand visa subclass 482 – Core Skills stream and the Employer Nomination Scheme subclass 186 – Direct Entry pathway.

The CSOL should not be treated as a universal occupation list for every Australian skilled visa.

ANZSCO and Occupation Codes

Each occupation is associated with an ANZSCO code. The correct occupation should be determined from your actual duties, responsibilities, qualifications and experience rather than simply matching your job title.

For relevant visa programs, Australia currently uses different ANZSCO versions. ANZSCO 2022 applies to subclass 482 and 186, while relevant other skilled visa programs use the applicable ANZSCO 2013 framework.

Skills Assessment

For many skilled migration pathways, you will need a positive skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority.

Depending on your occupation, the assessing authority may include:

  • ACS
  • Engineers Australia
  • VETASSESS
  • Trades Recognition Australia
  • CPA Australia
  • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand
  • Institute of Public Accountants
  • ANMAC
  • Other occupation-specific authorities

A positive skills assessment does not itself guarantee a visa. It is one component of the overall eligibility assessment.

Occupation → Skills Assessment → Visa Pathway

We recommend checking your migration pathway in this order:

Your Occupation
↓
ANZSCO Code
↓
Skills Assessment Authority
↓
Skills Assessment
↓
English & Other Eligibility
↓
Points / Sponsorship / Nomination
↓
Visa Pathway
↓
State or Regional Options
↓
Potential PR Pathway

This approach helps you understand the complete migration pathway instead of looking at an occupation list in isolation.

State Nomination and Occupations

For subclass 190 and 491, state and territory nomination is an additional consideration.

Each state and territory can have its own:

  • Occupation requirements
  • Priority sectors
  • Skills requirements
  • Employment requirements
  • Residence requirements
  • English requirements
  • Points requirements
  • Invitation or registration processes

Therefore, an occupation being available under a federal skilled migration framework does not necessarily mean every Australian state or territory will nominate applicants in that occupation.

Find Your Occupation

We recommend creating an occupation search tool on this page with the following fields:
