Entertainment Visas – Explore Australian visa options for eligible entertainers, performers, artists and entertainment professionals seeking to work or participate in approved activities in Australia.

Entertainment Visas Australia

Entertainment Visas are designed for eligible international performers, artists, production professionals and entertainment workers who need to travel to Australia for approved entertainment activities. Depending on the nature of the work, an appropriate temporary visa may allow eligible applicants to participate in film, television, live performances, production and entertainment-related activities in Australia.

The Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408) – Entertainment Activities stream is a key visa option for people intending to work in Australia's entertainment industry. It can cover performers, production staff and support staff working on eligible film, television or live productions.

Who Can Apply for an Entertainment Visa?

Entertainment visa options may be relevant to a range of professionals, including:

  • Actors and performers

  • Singers and musicians

  • Theatre performers

  • Comedians

  • Television and film performers

  • Directors and production professionals

  • Camera, lighting and sound crew

  • Choreographers

  • Entertainment support staff

  • International artists and entertainers

  • Documentary presenters

  • Certain media and production personnel

The appropriate visa depends on the actual activities the applicant will undertake in Australia. Someone attending an event for promotional purposes without performing may require a different visa from an entertainer who will perform in Australia.

Subclass 408 Entertainment Activities Stream

The Subclass 408 Entertainment Activities stream allows eligible applicants to work in Australia's entertainment industry as a performer, production staff member or support staff.

Eligible activities can include work on:

  • Film productions

  • Television productions

  • Live theatre

  • Stage performances

  • Music productions

  • Entertainment events

  • Documentaries

  • Certain commercials intended for overseas markets

  • Non-profit entertainment productions

The Department of Home Affairs identifies several entertainment activity categories, including performing in government-subsidised or non-subsidised film and television productions, performing outside film and television, production work, entertainment support work, non-profit engagements and certain overseas-market documentaries or commercials.

Entertainment Visa Requirements

Applicants generally need to demonstrate that their proposed activities meet the requirements of the relevant visa pathway.

For the Subclass 408 Entertainment Activities stream, this can include:

  • A contract or other evidence of the proposed engagement

  • Details of the production or entertainment activity

  • Evidence of the applicant's role

  • Relevant professional experience and skills

  • Evidence of sufficient funds to support the applicant and accompanying dependants

  • Health and character requirements

  • Appropriate sponsorship or support where required

For certain entertainment activities, the Australian sponsor or supporter may also need to undertake consultation with the relevant union and obtain an Arts certificate where required.

How Long Can an Entertainment Visa Last?

The Subclass 408 Entertainment Activities stream can allow eligible applicants to stay in Australia for up to two years, depending on the approved activity and visa grant.

The actual period granted is determined according to the proposed entertainment activity. The visa is generally granted with multiple-entry travel rights, allowing the visa holder to leave and return to Australia while the visa remains valid.

Sponsor or Supporter Requirements

Whether an applicant needs a sponsor or supporter depends on the circumstances of the application.

For the Subclass 408 Entertainment Activities stream:

  • Applicants applying outside Australia and intending to stay for less than three months may be able to apply with a supporter rather than a sponsor.

  • Applicants applying in Australia, or applying from outside Australia for a stay of more than three months, generally require a sponsor.

The Australian organisation involved should provide appropriate evidence of the proposed entertainment engagement.

Entertainment Work in Australia

Entertainment visa holders must comply with the conditions of their visa and undertake the activities for which the visa was granted.

The Department of Home Affairs requires visa holders to comply with Australian laws and visa conditions. Changes to approved engagements, venues or schedules may require permission before the changes are made.

Entertainment Visa vs Subclass 400

It is important to choose the correct visa based on the actual purpose of the visit.

The Temporary Work (Short Stay Specialist) visa (Subclass 400) may be suitable for certain specialist or short-term activities connected with productions for overseas markets or promotional activities. However, Subclass 400 does not allow a person to perform as an entertainer in Australia or work as support staff for an entertainer performing in Australia.

For performances and entertainment work taking place in Australia, the Subclass 408 Entertainment Activities stream may be the more appropriate pathway.
