Bridging Visa A (BVA) vs. Bridging Visa B (BVB)

Bridging Visa A (BVA): Automatically granted when you apply for an eligible substantive visa from within Australia, allowing you to remain lawfully after your current visa expires. However, a BVA does not include travel rights and ceases immediately if you depart the country. Bridging Visa B (BVB): Specifically required if you need to travel overseas and return while your primary visa application is undecided. A BVB grants a designated travel period, allowing you to re-enter Australia legally. You must ensure you return before the specified travel window expires. What Happens if You Leave Without a BVB? Bridging visas (BVA, BVB, or BVC) cannot be applied for or granted while you are outside Australia. If you leave without a BVB—or fail to return within your permitted travel window—you will need to secure an alternative substantive visa to re-enter the country. Depending on your urgency and eligibility, alternative entry options may include: Visitor Visa (Subclass 600, 651, or 601): Often utilized for rapid re-entry, though visitor visas prohibit working in Australia. Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417 or 462): Suitable if you meet age and nationality requirements. Temporary Work or Sponsored Visas: Such as the Subclass 400 or Skills in Demand (Subclass 482) visa, if sponsored by an eligible employer. Returning to Australia on a Visitor Visa Departmental policy allows for the grant of a Visitor visa even if you have a long-term permanent or substantive visa application pending, provided you satisfy the "genuine temporary entrant" requirement. The primary purpose must be to return lawfully to Australia to await your pending application. Once back in Australia on your Visitor visa, you can typically apply for a new Bridging Visa associated with your active application. Keep in mind that re-entering on a Visitor visa may temporarily suspend any work rights you previously held under a BVA until the new bridging status takes effect.
